Following a successful tender process alongside REdsgn Architects, HM Construction was appointed to transform a substantial agricultural barn near North Newton, Somerset, into two contemporary homes for separate families.
The project involved converting the existing barn into two distinct residential properties, each designed to combine modern living spaces with architectural features inspired by the building's agricultural heritage.
Both homes feature expansive open-plan layouts, complemented by double-height vaulted ceilings and impressive floor-to-ceiling glass curtain walls. These large glazed areas allow natural light to flow throughout the interiors, creating bright, spacious living environments.
The design incorporates a carefully selected combination of traditional and contemporary materials, including corrugated steel and larch cladding, aluminium windows and feature stone walling. Internally, polished concrete flooring and bespoke steel staircases add to the modern industrial character of the properties.
Energy efficiency and everyday comfort were also key considerations throughout the development. Air source heat pumps, underfloor heating and solar PV panels were incorporated into the homes, providing modern heating solutions alongside renewable energy generation.
An important aspect of the project was maintaining the agreed construction programme. Both families had sold their previous properties to fund the development and were living in temporary rented accommodation during the final stages of construction. Keeping the project on schedule was therefore a key priority, requiring careful coordination throughout the build.
The completed barn conversions demonstrate how traditional agricultural structures can be transformed into distinctive contemporary homes, combining striking architectural design, modern construction materials and energy-efficient technologies.
